KISSIMMEE , Fla., Dec. 6, 2006 – Officials from Kissimmee Utility Authority on Tuesday handed over the keys and property deed for its Roy E. Hansel diesel power plant to the city of Kissimmee.

The historic plant was decommissioned in September 2005 after 104 years of continuous service.

The vacated buildings and lakefront property, totaling approximately four acres, will be included in the city’s redevelopment plans for downtown Kissimmee.

The KUA board of directors authorized the decommissioning of the diesel plant in February 2005 because the units were no longer economical to operate. A separate 50-megawatt (MW) combined cycle plant and related facilities will continue to operate at the southern end of the Hansel site until its scheduled retirement date in 2013.

Founded in 1901, KUA (www.kua.com) is Florida’s sixth largest community-owned utility providing electric and telecommunication services to 170,000 residents in five Central Florida counties.
