KISSIMMEE, Fla., August 16, 11:45 am – Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) crews and crews from throughout Florida have been working around the clock to repair the damage from Hurricane Charley, and the outage totals are starting to reflect the results. The utility has restored power to 22,000, or nearly 40 percent, of its customers who lost power when Hurricane Charley slammed Central Florida on Friday. As of 11:00 a.m. Monday, 33,000 KUA customers remained without power, down from a peak of 58,000 at midnight Friday. The storm inflicted significant damage to KUA infrastructure.

As of Sunday, power had been restored to critical infrastructure — including Osceola Regional Medical Center, Florida Hospital Kissimmee and the Osceola County Sheriff’s Department.

Customers should call 407-933-777 to report an outage. Customers may want to consider moving themselves and their families — especially those with special needs — to an alternate location during these extended outages.

Three comfort stations have been established in Osceola County. Residents who need ice and water should go the Osceola Square Mall on Highway 192, the Lowe’s Distribution Center, 2561 Ham Brown Road near Poinciana. These facilities will also provide free meals as well as shower and restroom facilities. Limited Ice available at the BVL Community Center located at 501 Florida Parkway.

More information is available on the Public Information Line at 407-343-6942. To speak with someone directly, call 407-343-7000. More information will be available as it becomes available.
Founded in 1901, KUA (www.kua.com) is Florida’s sixth largest community-owned utility providing electric service to 58,000 customers in Osceola County.
