KISSIMMEE, Fla., November 25, 8:30 am
– Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) held its annual election of officers on Monday evening.
Don Shearer, a Walt Disney World executive, was elected chairman of the five-member board of
directors. He has served as vice-chairman of the board since 2001. Shearer succeeds Larry
Walter, who left the board in September after serving two five-year terms.
Also at the meeting, Nancy Gemskie was elected vice-chairman and is the first woman to hold
that position since the utility was established in 1901. Domingo Toro will continue to serve
as secretary, Bill Hart will serve as assistant secretary and Fred Cumbie, Jr. will serve as
director.
The utility’s board of directors sets policy direction for the utility. Specifically, the
board approves annual budgets, sets rates and approves major purchases. The board also
directs a general manager who is responsible for day-to-day operations of the utility.
Founded in 1901, KUA is Florida’s sixth largest community-owned utility serving 61,000
electric, water and Internet customers in five Central Florida counties.
