Cold Weather to Drive Up Utility Bills

KISSIMMEE, Fla., January 16, 12:00 pm – With record-setting cold temperatures in central Florida, this winter is shaping up to be one of the coldest on record. These dramatic drops in temperature require heating systems to run longer to maintain the structure’s desired comfort level. As a result, customers of the Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) will experience significantly higher energy bills in January and February.

Energy consumption in Kissimmee was 9 percent higher in December 2000 than December 1999, and KUA officials are seeing customer bills increase from 30% to as much as 300% in some cases.

“We certainly understand our customers’ concern about energy prices,” said Jim Welsh, KUA’s president & general manager. “KUA is working daily to keep rates low, and we encourage our customers to do their part by working to conserve electricity.”

Here are some ways to help keep heating costs down:
* Set the thermostat between 68-70 degrees. Each degree above 70 adds three to six percent to the bill.
* Check, clean and replace air filters monthly.
* Wrap water heater in an insulation blanket.
* Caulk spaces around windows or other places where cool drafts can get in or heat can escape.

KUA helps low-income families in need of assistance with energy costs through its Good Neighbor Energy Fund. Each year, KUA matches customer contributions of $17,500 for a total of $35,000.
